What Is Photo to Cartoon?

Photo to Cartoon lets you convert a real photo into a personalised cartoon character in about one minute. The result is a character you can place into scenes, actions, and stories while keeping visual consistency.

Works with: A clear photo of a face. A full-body photo on a plain background gives the most reusable character.

Why it matters: Photo to Cartoon gives you a fast way to turn a photo into a character you can reuse across your entire project.

Step by Step: Creating a Cartoon Character from a Photo

Step 1: Reference Photo

Open the Photo to Cartoon feature from your dashboard. It sits in the sidebar under Create. At the top of the panel the version picker shows Cartoonize V3, the recommended default; V1 and V2 are still available in the same dropdown.

Upload your photo in the Reference Face Photo box (PNG, JPG or WEBP, up to 10 MB). A sharp, well-lit face with nothing covering it gives the best likeness.

Step 2: Describe your cartoon avatar (optional)

The field is called Describe your Cartoon Avatar. Say how you want the cartoon version to look, for example Imagine the uploaded photo as a cartoon avatar dressed as a pirate. You can also leave it empty: the photo and the style are enough to generate.

Three helpers sit on the field, and all three need the photo uploaded first:

AI Improve (a toggle, on by default): when you click Generate, it rewrites your description into a clearer one that matches the photo and fills in Action & Expression and Background for you. Your text is replaced with the improved version. Switch it off if you want your words used exactly as typed.

Inspire Me: writes a description for you from the photo. With a rough idea typed in, it builds on that idea. Click again for another version.

Microphone: speak the description instead of typing it.

Advanced Options, the collapsed row under the field, holds two optional fields: Action & Expression (for example Laughing with a parrot on his shoulder) and Background (for example Tropical island shore). Both are empty by default. If you plan to reuse the character across a story, set them to Full body front view, standing and smiling and Plain white background, so the first image works as a clean reference for every scene that follows.

Step 3: Choose Style and Aspect Ratio

Select the Style (nine to choose from: Pixar Inspired, Anime, Modern Western Cartoon, Chibi, Action Comic, Watercolor Illustration, 2D Flat Illustration, 3D Cartoon and Claymation 3D) and the Aspect Ratio (1:1, 3:4, 9:16, 4:3 or 16:9, default 1:1) that fit your project. Pick one style and keep it for the whole project.

Step 4: Generate Your Cartoon Avatar

Click Generate. Each generation costs 4 credits and your cartoon avatar appears on the right. If AI Improve is on, the description and the Advanced Options fields update to the improved version as the image generates.

On the image you will find Reuse Prompt (top left) and, top right, the icons to favourite, pin, upscale, make the background transparent, download or delete it. Switch between Single, Grid and Favourites views at the top.

At this point, your character is ready to use.

Next: Put your character into new scenes

After the first image, a Next Step: Use Editor Pro card appears, and the orange buttons on the image open each editor with your character already loaded: Editor Pro for freeform changes, Edit Action, Edit Expression, Edit Outfit, Background, Erase, Reframe and Edit Perspective. Each one changes a single thing and keeps the character the same.

Press Edit Action on your cartoon avatar.

Pick a pose and an action from the presets, or type your own after the built-in "Change the pose or action to:" prefix.

Generate. The new scene keeps the same face, hair and outfit.

Pro Tip: For best results, use a full body reference image. This makes it easier to reuse the character across multiple pages and scenes.

If you only have a portrait image, first create a full body version of the character, then use that full body image as your main reference for future scenes.
